A Masterclass in Old-School Tile Setting
This bathroom remodel in Claremont, California, showcases what happens when traditional craftsmanship meets modern design. Every inch of this project was done by hand, led by Manny, our master tile setter with more than 40 years of experience.

While most tile installations today rely on prefabricated backer board and quick-set methods, this project used a time-honored approach known as mud work — a technique that’s becoming rare in modern construction but remains the gold standard for high-end, custom tile installation.
GCS Tile Setting Process
1. The Layout
Every project starts with a detailed layout. Before a single tile is set, Manny maps out every line and level with precision laser measurements. The shower niche, bench, and wall heights are framed so the tile pattern will flow perfectly once installed.
2. Hot Mop and Waterproofing
The shower pan is hot-mopped and fully waterproofed. Layers of paper and lath are applied to the shower walls, followed by a scratch coat, brown coat, and topcoat — the signature steps of a true mud job. This process ensures that every wall and floor surface is flat, level, and perfectly plumb, allowing the tile to sit evenly from corner to corner.
3. Floating the Walls and Floors
Manny then floats the entire shower, the bathroom walls, and the floor — a process that creates flawless, smooth surfaces ready for tile. Floating is what separates standard work from master craftsmanship; it allows for perfectly aligned grout joints, balanced layouts, and the longevity that comes only from a stable base.
4. Setting the Tile by Hand
Once the surfaces are floated, the real artistry begins. Manny installs each tile by hand, starting with the large-format 24″ x 48″ Florim Sensi Porcelain panels in the steam shower. Every edge is mitered — cut at a perfect angle so no trim is needed. The result is a seamless, modern spa look that only an expert tile setter can achieve.
The floor features Kasbah Star & Cross Terracotta Tile, handmade in Mexico and installed in an intricate interlocking pattern. Each piece is shaped like a puzzle, fitted together one by one with precision and patience.
The wall field tile is handmade Spanish subway tile, accented with a Talavera decorative border and pencil liner that wraps through the entire bathroom. Together, these tiles create a warm, timeless aesthetic that blends classic craftsmanship with refined design.
5. Finishing Touches
Once the tilework is complete, every surface is grouted, sealed, and polished by hand. The steam shower, freestanding soaking tub, and vanity area come together to form a bright, elegant retreat.
Craftsmanship and Teamwork
This project was completed by Manny, with assistance from Andrew throughout the process.
Joey handled the plumbing, Elias provided the carpentry, and Albert completed the painting and final detailing.
